Richard Garriott is an unusually interesting person to examine astrologically because his life combines several themes that do not normally appear together in one career.

He is a programmer and game designer.

A creator of fantasy worlds.

An entrepreneur.

An explorer.

A private astronaut.

A deep-ocean traveler.

And, through Ultima, one of the early game designers to make morality, identity and philosophy part of the mechanics of a computer role-playing game.

His official biography describes him as a founding figure in both the videogame and commercial-spaceflight industries, creator of the Ultima series, founder of several gaming companies, an astronaut, and an explorer who has traveled from the poles to orbit and eventually Challenger Deep. (RichardGarriott.com)

Astrologically, that unusual combination is immediately visible.

There is one major complication, however:

Garriott’s birth time is not publicly established.

The chart we are examining uses:

July 4, 1961
Cambridge, England
1:00 PM BST

with 1:00 PM serving only as a working hypothesis.

That distinction matters enormously.

We can analyze most of the planetary signs and interplanetary aspects with confidence.

We cannot yet treat the Ascendant, Midheaven, houses or exact Moon position as established facts.

Interestingly, however, the hypothetical 1:00 PM chart produces several surprisingly compelling correlations with his life—and may actually be useful as a starting point for rectification.

What We Can Trust Without Knowing the Birth Time

The supplied chart gives approximately:

Sun — 12° Cancer
Mercury retrograde — 2° Cancer
Venus — 27° Taurus
Mars — 3° Virgo
Jupiter retrograde — 4° Aquarius
Saturn retrograde — 27° Capricorn
Uranus — 23° Leo
Neptune retrograde — 8° Scorpio
Pluto — 6° Virgo

Those placements remain essentially usable regardless of whether he was born at 8 AM, 1 PM or 8 PM.

The Moon is more difficult.

At the assumed 1:00 PM birth time it sits at approximately 3°56′ Aries.

But on July 4, 1961 the Moon entered Aries at roughly 6:12 AM British Summer Time.

Therefore if Garriott was born early enough that morning, he could actually have a late Pisces Moon rather than an Aries Moon.

That is important enough that I would not build a psychological interpretation around his Moon yet.

The angles are even more sensitive.

The 1:00 PM chart gives approximately:

Libra Ascendant — 8°39′
Cancer Midheaven — 11°23′

Those should presently be treated as experimental.

Cancer Sun: Building Worlds That Feel Like Places

The most obvious placement is the Cancer Sun.

Cancer is usually associated with:

memory,

belonging,

home,

continuity,

protection,

heritage,

and emotional attachment.

That might initially sound strange for a technological innovator.

But think about what Garriott actually created.

He did not simply make games involving numbers and combat systems.

He built Britannia.

Players returned repeatedly to the same world.

Locations acquired history.

Characters reappeared.

Political and moral consequences carried across games.

The fictional world began developing something resembling cultural memory.

That is extremely Cancerian.

Cancer wants somewhere to belong.

Garriott’s games increasingly gave players not merely something to defeat but a world to inhabit.

His own description of his career emphasizes precisely this world-building instinct. His official gaming history describes the transition from Akalabeth into increasingly elaborate worlds containing towns, dungeons and characters, eventually culminating in Ultima and persistent online worlds. (RichardGarriott.com)

Sun Trine Neptune: The Myth-Maker

One of the strongest creative signatures in the chart is the Cancer Sun trine Neptune in Scorpio.

The aspect is about four degrees from exact.

Neptune symbolizes:

imagination,

fantasy,

myth,

altered realities,

idealism,

dreams,

and dissolving the boundary between what is physically real and what is imagined.

That is almost a perfect description of a person whose life’s work involves constructing alternate realities.

The Cancer Sun gives those realities emotional continuity.

Neptune gives them mythology.

This combination is particularly appropriate for someone associated with the concept of the avatar—a person temporarily entering another identity inside another world.

Garriott’s own biography credits him with popularizing the term “avatar” for one’s virtual self. (RichardGarriott.com)

Symbolically, that is deeply Neptunian:

Who am I when I enter another reality?

Mercury Retrograde in Cancer: The Recursive World-Builder

Mercury at approximately 2° Cancer, retrograde, is another fascinating placement.

Mercury represents:

thinking,

coding,

language,

systems,

communication,

and information.

Cancer thinks through memory and continuity.

Retrograde Mercury often suggests a mind that works recursively—returning, revising, reconsidering and building internally before expressing externally.

Garriott repeatedly returned to the same fictional universe.

Instead of constantly discarding one world and inventing another, he kept expanding the Ultima mythology.

That feels very compatible with a Cancer Mercury:

the mind remembers its own world.

But Mercury has another important feature.

Mercury Sextile Mars and Pluto

Mercury forms a close sextile with Mars in Virgo and a somewhat wider sextile with Pluto in Virgo.

This is a strong technical signature.

Mercury = information.

Virgo = systems, detail, debugging, organization.

Mars = action.

Pluto = depth, obsession and transformation.

This combination can produce someone who does not merely imagine things but has the capacity to take systems apart and make them work.

That distinction matters enormously.

Lots of people imagine fantasy worlds.

Very few people can program them.

Garriott began programming while still very young, first working through teletype systems before moving to the Apple II. His early Akalabeth became the precursor to Ultima. (RichardGarriott.com)

This chart combines imaginative Neptune with highly practical Virgo.

That may be one of its central signatures:

dream it—and then engineer it.

Mars Conjunct Pluto in Virgo: Obsessive Technical Drive

Perhaps the most powerful aspect in the entire natal chart is:

Mars at 3° Virgo conjunct Pluto at 6° Virgo.

This is only about three degrees apart.

Mars represents:

drive,

competition,

will,

courage,

action,

and the desire to overcome obstacles.

Pluto intensifies whatever it touches.

It adds:

obsession,

depth,

extremity,

survival,

transformation,

and the desire to penetrate beyond ordinary limits.

Place both in Virgo and the intensity becomes focused through:

technical detail,

craftsmanship,

problem-solving,

systems,

and refinement.

This is not merely somebody who wants to build something.

It is someone who may become deeply absorbed in making the system work.

There is almost an engineer’s relentlessness here.

And the symbolism extends surprisingly well beyond gaming.

Garriott did not restrict his exploratory interests to safe tourism.

He went:

to Antarctica,

to the Titanic,

to hydrothermal vents,

into orbit,

and ultimately to Challenger Deep.

His own account of his expeditions describes travel from Antarctic conditions and deep-sea submersibles to spaceflight. (RichardGarriott.com)

Mars-Pluto is very comfortable with extremes.

Virgo wants technical preparation.

Together:

prepare meticulously, then enter an environment most people would never enter.

Jupiter in Aquarius: The Futurist

Jupiter at approximately 4° Aquarius may be one of the clearest explanations for the scale of Garriott’s ambitions.

Aquarius concerns:

technology,

networks,

experimentation,

future society,

unconventional ideas,

and collective systems.

Jupiter expands whatever it touches.

So Jupiter in Aquarius tends to think:

bigger networks, bigger futures, bigger technological possibilities.

This is an excellent placement for someone who moved early into online persistent worlds.

And the Jupiter placement becomes even more remarkable when we examine one of his biggest career events later.

We will return to that.

Jupiter Square Neptune: Enormous Visions

Jupiter in Aquarius squares Neptune in Scorpio by roughly four degrees.

This can be both magnificent and dangerous.

Jupiter-Neptune combinations produce:

large dreams,

idealism,

faith,

vision,

mythic thinking,

and sometimes projects whose scale exceeds conventional practicality.

The positive expression is:

“Why shouldn’t this be possible?”

The negative expression can be:

“I may be underestimating how difficult this actually is.”

But for pioneers, some degree of unrealistic optimism is useful.

Nobody pioneers online virtual worlds, private spaceflight or extreme exploration by thinking exclusively in terms of safe conventional limits.

Garriott’s own phrase “Explore/Create” captures Jupiter-Neptune very well: exploration and imagination feeding one another. (RichardGarriott.com)

Venus in Taurus: The Builder of Enduring Value

Venus is extremely strong by sign at 27° Taurus.

Taurus emphasizes:

craft,

beauty,

physical quality,

resources,

stability,

and things designed to last.

This is interesting when applied to Ultima.

Despite Garriott’s futuristic instincts, his games were not disposable experiments.

They developed deep lore.

Fans maintained attachments to them for decades.

There is something very Taurus about creating a fictional world substantial enough that people continue returning to it long after the original technology becomes obsolete.

But Venus has two particularly important aspects.

Venus Trine Saturn: Build Something That Lasts

Venus at 27° Taurus forms an almost exact trine with Saturn at 27° Capricorn.

This is one of the tightest aspects in the chart.

Venus-Saturn can symbolize:

craftsmanship,

durability,

long-term value,

serious artistic commitment,

and the ability to turn aesthetics into structure.

This is not simply:

“I had a creative idea.”

It is:

“I built an institution around the creative idea.”

Origin Systems eventually became one of the defining computer-game studios of its period. Garriott founded it with his brother in 1983, and Electronic Arts acquired the company in 1992. (RichardGarriott.com)

That is Venus-Saturn at a very concrete level:

creative property becomes lasting structure and economic value.

Venus Square Uranus: Tradition Meets Innovation

But Venus also squares Uranus in Leo.

So the chart contains a fascinating contradiction.

Venus-Saturn wants enduring form.

Venus-Uranus wants novelty.

He therefore appears astrologically neither purely conservative nor purely experimental.

Instead:

take something old and reinvent it.

Fantasy role-playing already existed through tabletop games.

Garriott translated it into computer worlds.

Traditional heroic stories existed.

He introduced a game in which moral behavior itself became central.

Multiplayer games existed.

Ultima Online helped push the persistent online world toward a much larger scale.

Stable form + disruptive innovation.

That combination is central to his career.

Saturn in Capricorn: The Institution Builder

Saturn is at approximately 27° Capricorn, its own sign.

This is one of the strongest Saturn positions possible in traditional astrology.

Saturn in Capricorn understands:

hierarchy,

organization,

long-range planning,

institutions,

authority,

and consequences.

That immediately explains something important about Garriott.

He was never only a programmer.

He repeatedly became an institution builder.

Origin Systems.

Destination Games.

Portalarium.

Space Adventures.

Later, leadership in the Explorers Club.

His official biography describes three major gaming companies as well as his role in commercial spaceflight organizations. (RichardGarriott.com)

Aquarian Jupiter dreams of the future.

Capricorn Saturn asks:

How do we build an organization capable of getting there?

That combination is powerful.

The Hypothetical Aries Moon

If the 1:00 PM time eventually proves approximately correct, then Garriott has an early Aries Moon.

That would make considerable psychological sense.

An Aries Moon often wants:

movement,

challenge,

immediacy,

autonomy,

competition,

and new experiences.

It would fit the explorer who moves from:

computer programming

to polar travel,

to deep sea,

to space.

The estimated Moon also sextiles Jupiter in Aquarius quite closely, strengthening adventurous optimism.

But we have to be disciplined here.

If he was born before roughly 6:12 AM BST, the Moon would instead be in late Pisces.

A Pisces Moon would emphasize imagination, sensitivity and fantasy far more strongly.

Both can be made to sound plausible after the fact.

That is precisely why we should not decide the Moon sign psychologically.

This is where rectification becomes useful.

The 1:00 PM Chart Produces a Remarkable Midheaven

Here the hypothetical chart suddenly becomes very interesting.

At 1:00 PM, the Midheaven falls around:

11°23′ Cancer.

Garriott’s Sun is:

12°15′ Cancer.

That puts the Sun less than one degree from the Midheaven.

If this were his actual birth chart, it would be extremely significant.

Sun conjunct Midheaven frequently describes someone whose:

identity,

name,

personal creativity,

leadership,

and public vocation

become strongly intertwined.

Garriott did not disappear anonymously behind his games.

He became Lord British, effectively placing part of his own persona inside the universe he created.

His identity and creation became linked.

A Sun-Midheaven conjunction would fit that beautifully.

But we must not cheat.

The 1:00 PM birth time was an estimate.

Therefore we cannot say:

“His Sun is on the Midheaven, therefore 1 PM must be right.”

We can only say:

This is an intriguing rectification clue worth testing.

And some event timing makes it more interesting still.

1983: Origin Systems and a Saturn Test

Garriott founded Origin Systems with his brother in 1983, partly after dissatisfaction with outside publishing arrangements. (RichardGarriott.com)

Astrologically, 1983 was an extraordinary Saturn period for him.

During that year:

transiting Saturn in late Libra squared natal Saturn in late Capricorn.

At nearly the same time:

transiting Pluto in Libra also squared natal Saturn.

That is a serious restructuring signature.

Saturn-Saturn squares often correspond with:

taking responsibility,

encountering institutional limitations,

and having to construct a stronger framework.

Pluto-Saturn intensifies the issue:

the existing structure must fundamentally change.

What actually happened?

Instead of continuing to depend upon publishers, he helped create his own company.

That is an almost textbook constructive response to Saturn:

If the existing institution restricts you, build a stronger institution.

1985: Ultima IV and the Jupiter Return

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar appeared in late 1985 and represented an important philosophical shift in the series, centering the player’s development around virtues and moral conduct rather than simply defeating a conventional villain. (MobyGames)

Garriott was also passing through his Jupiter return in Aquarius during 1985.

That is extremely appropriate.

Jupiter concerns:

philosophy,

ethics,

worldview,

meaning,

and moral systems.

Aquarius asks how individuals function within a larger system.

And suddenly Garriott produces a game whose central question is not merely:

Can you win?

but:

What kind of person will your avatar become?

There was also an exacting Saturn-Uranus square transit operating around this period, symbolically connecting:

structure and innovation.

The series was becoming more sophisticated precisely by changing what an RPG was expected to do.

1997: Ultima Online—One of the Strongest Transit Signatures

This may be the most impressive event correlation in the chart.

Ultima Online was released on September 24, 1997. (MobyGames)

On that date, several extraordinary transits were occurring.

Uranus conjunct natal Jupiter

Transiting Uranus was approximately 4° Aquarius.

Natal Jupiter is approximately 4° Aquarius.

The conjunction was almost exact.

This is astonishingly appropriate for the launch of a groundbreaking online world.

Uranus:

technology,

networks,

innovation,

disruption.

Jupiter:

expansion,

reach,

scale,

new horizons.

Aquarius:

collective systems and technological communities.

Combine them:

massive technological expansion into a new social form.

That is almost literally Ultima Online.

Neptune conjunct natal Saturn

At the same time, Neptune in late Capricorn was almost exactly conjunct Garriott’s 27° Capricorn Saturn.

Saturn builds structures.

Neptune dissolves boundaries.

Ultima Online created a structured world whose borders were no longer defined by one player sitting alone with one game.

Thousands of people could inhabit a shared imagined environment.

Neptune entered Saturn’s structure.

The dream became architecture.

Pluto square natal Mars

Pluto was also almost exactly square Garriott’s 3° Virgo Mars.

That suggests:

enormous effort,

intensity,

technical pressure,

and a transformative push.

Three powerful outer-planet contacts simultaneously surrounding one of the defining releases of his career is genuinely striking astrologically.

2000: Leaving Origin

Garriott left Origin in March 2000 and subsequently created Destination Games. (MobyGames)

The sky again fits the symbolism nicely.

Neptune was close to conjuncting his natal Jupiter in Aquarius while Jupiter itself opposed natal Neptune.

That is essentially a Jupiter-Neptune activation.

The natal Jupiter-Neptune square already represents enormous dreams.

Around 2000 that natal pattern was being strongly awakened.

This can correspond with:

leaving an old vision,

pursuing a new one,

disillusionment with one structure,

and expanding toward another ideal.

Uranus was also approaching opposition to natal Uranus—the classic midlife Uranian phase associated astrologically with:

reinvention,

freedom,

and refusing to remain inside structures that have become limiting.

Again, the biography matches the symbolism unusually well.

2008: Taking the Dream Literally Into Space

On October 12, 2008, Garriott launched aboard Soyuz TMA-13 and traveled to the International Space Station, fulfilling a goal he had pursued for decades. NASA records the launch on October 12 and his return on October 24. (NASA)

At the launch:

Jupiter was opposing his Cancer Sun.

That is classic Jupiter symbolism:

expansion,

distance,

exploration,

public visibility,

and reaching beyond previous limits.

But another aspect is almost poetic.

Neptune was opposing natal Uranus.

Uranus symbolizes:

technology,

aviation,

space,

radical exploration.

Neptune symbolizes:

the dream,

the impossible vision,

the imagination.

The aspect can therefore be read as:

the technological dream becomes real.

Garriott himself described spaceflight as a goal he had been working toward for thirty years. (RichardGarriott.com)

An Unexpected Rectification Clue From the Spaceflight

Here is where the 1:00 PM birth-time hypothesis becomes especially interesting.

Using that assumed birth time and a standard solar-arc calculation, Garriott’s solar-arc Ascendant at the October 12, 2008 launch falls at approximately:

23°53′ Scorpio.

His natal Uranus is:

23°28′ Leo.

That creates a solar-arc Ascendant square Uranus within roughly half a degree.

If the time is even approximately correct, that is a very strong symbolic contact for:

personally entering radical technology and literally leaving Earth.

Unlike the natal planets, solar-arc angles depend strongly upon the birth time.

So this is exactly the kind of event we can use during rectification.

It does not prove 1:00 PM is right.

But it makes 1:00 PM much more interesting than a completely arbitrary placeholder normally would be.

2021: Going in the Opposite Direction—Challenger Deep

Garriott did not stop at going upward.

On March 1, 2021, he reached Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, becoming part of a rare group of explorers who have traveled to extraordinary extremes of both altitude and depth. The Explorers Club records his Mariana Trench journey on that date. (The Explorers Club)

The astrological symbolism is almost comically appropriate.

On that date:

Saturn was almost exactly square natal Neptune.

And:

Uranus was almost exactly opposite natal Neptune.

Neptune rules symbolically:

oceans,

depths,

the mysterious,

the unseen.

Saturn says:

make it physical.

Uranus says:

use extraordinary technology to enter it.

So in 2008, Neptune-Uranus symbolism accompanied the technological dream of space.

In 2021, Neptune was again heavily activated as he descended to the deepest part of the ocean.

Garriott’s Neptune appears repeatedly connected with the most extraordinary exploratory chapters of his life.

The Central Pattern: Create and Explore

Garriott’s personal motto could almost have been extracted from the chart.

His own website uses:

Explore / Create. (RichardGarriott.com)

The astrology contains the same duality.

Cancer + Neptune: Create worlds.

Mercury + Virgo: Engineer them.

Mars-Pluto: Push further.

Jupiter in Aquarius: Imagine the future.

Saturn in Capricorn: Build the institution.

Uranus: Break into territory that did not exist previously.

And then repeat the process in physical reality.

First create virtual worlds.

Then explore the actual world.

Then leave it.

Then descend beneath it.

There is a remarkable continuity between the game designer and the explorer.

They may look like two careers.

Astrologically, they look much more like the same psychological impulse expressed through different mediums.

Could We Rectify His Birth Time?

Yes.

This chart is actually an excellent candidate for astrological rectification because Garriott has an unusually well-documented life containing precisely dated major events.

I would not attempt to rectify primarily from personality.

That becomes too subjective.

Instead I would use events such as:

  • commercial breakthrough with Akalabeth,
  • incorporation/founding of Origin Systems in 1983,
  • Ultima IV release in November 1985,
  • the EA acquisition in 1992,
  • Ultima Online release on September 24, 1997,
  • departure from Origin on March 30, 2000,
  • Soyuz launch on October 12, 2008,
  • return from space on October 24, 2008,
  • Challenger Deep on March 1, 2021,
  • and other precisely dated major personal or professional events.

I would then test candidate birth times across the day using:

solar-arc Ascendant and Midheaven,
secondary progressed angles and Moon,
transits to angles,
progressed lunations,
and repeated angular activation across independent events.

The important part would be not changing the proposed birth time separately for every event.

One birth time must explain several events reasonably well.

That is what makes rectification meaningful.

What About the 1:00 PM Estimate?

My first impression is:

I would not throw it away.

Normally, an arbitrary 1:00 PM chart would be useful only for planetary positions.

But this one produces two noteworthy clues:

1. The natal Sun sits almost exactly on the hypothetical Midheaven.

That fits a man whose personal identity became inseparable from his public creative vocation.

2. The solar-arc Ascendant almost exactly squares Uranus on the day he launches into space.

That is precisely the kind of time-sensitive event contact a rectifier would want to investigate.

Those could still be coincidences.

A proper rectification would test whether moving the birth time earlier or later improves the fit across all major events.

But surprisingly, the 1:00 PM hypothesis has already passed the first test:

it produces something worth investigating.

A Preliminary Psychological Portrait

Ignoring the uncertain houses and Moon, this chart describes someone who combines several qualities unusually well.

He is imaginative without being merely dreamy.

Technical without being merely mechanical.

Traditional enough to construct lasting worlds.

Rebellious enough to reinvent them.

Capable of intense concentration.

Interested in moral and philosophical systems.

Fascinated by unexplored territory.

And unusually willing to make imaginative concepts physical.

That last point may be the defining signature.

Plenty of people dream about:

fantasy kingdoms,

online societies,

outer space,

the Titanic,

Antarctica,

and the bottom of the ocean.

Garriott repeatedly asked:

“How do I actually get there?”

That is perhaps the relationship between his Neptune and Virgo/Capricorn placements.

Neptune dreams.

Virgo works out the details.

Capricorn builds the structure.

Mars-Pluto pushes through the obstacle.

Uranus opens the unexplored door.

Jupiter says:

go farther.

And Cancer makes the places he creates feel enough like home that generations of players still remember them.
