Seven classical planets.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seven traditional astrological \u201cplanets\u201d were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Saturn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jupiter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mars<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sun<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Venus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mercury<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These were the seven wandering celestial bodies that ancient people could observe moving against the background of the fixed stars with the naked eye. The Sun and Moon were included as planets or \u201clights\u201d in traditional astrology even though modern astronomy classifies them differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For thousands of years, that produced a beautifully closed symbolic system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven planets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven days of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven metals in Western alchemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, once Western esotericists began comparing astrology with Indian subtle-body systems, seven principal chakras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then astronomy created a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Uranus was discovered in 1781.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Neptune was discovered in 1846.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pluto was discovered in 1930.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA confirms that Uranus was the first planet discovered using a telescope, while Neptune was identified in 1846 after mathematicians predicted its position from disturbances in Uranus&#8217;s orbit. Pluto was subsequently discovered in 1930 and remained classified astronomically as a planet until 2006, although astrologers generally continue treating it as a major astrological body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly astrology had ten major planetary bodies instead of seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But humans had not simultaneously discovered three obvious new chakras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what happens to the old planetary-chakra system?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto receive chakras of their own?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they replace older planetary rulers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do they share chakras with the classical planets?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or does their discovery reveal that the entire idea of assigning one planet to one chakra was too simplistic from the beginning?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is fascinating because the outer planets did not destroy the chakra correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They <strong>changed the way astrologers understood it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than thinking of the chakras as seven boxes containing seven planets, modern esoteric astrology increasingly treats them as levels of consciousness through which several planetary forces can operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that may actually create a richer model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First: The Seven-Planet Chakra System Is Not as Ancient as It Looks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before going further, an important historical correction is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is tempting to imagine ancient yogis sitting beneath the stars and directly assigning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturn to the root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jupiter to the sacral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars to the solar plexus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venus to the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercury to the throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sun and Moon to the third eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is no single universally accepted ancient Hindu scripture establishing the familiar Western chart of <strong>seven chakras = seven classical planets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Indian chakra traditions developed through Tantra and yoga and varied considerably between lineages. Even the now-famous seven-centre system became particularly prominent during the second millennium CE. Traditional texts more consistently connected the lower chakras with elements, seed syllables, deities, lotus petals, sounds, and subtle-body principles than with the Western seven-planet sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The neat planetary correspondences most modern Western readers encounter are largely products of later attempts to combine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indian Tantra + Western astrology + Hermeticism + Theosophy + modern occultism.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Astrologer Dane Rudhyar was already warning in 1949 that there was significant disagreement among occultists about exactly which planet should correspond with which chakra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That actually helps solve our outer-planet problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original Indian chakra system was never dependent upon there being exactly seven astronomical planets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>seven-to-seven correspondence was a symbolic overlay placed upon the chakra system later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So discovering Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto did not invalidate the chakras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It challenged the overlay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Seven Planets Seemed So Perfect Originally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before telescopes, Saturn formed the outer boundary of the visible planetary cosmos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traditional sequence consisted of seven moving celestial lights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Venus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jupiter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also became associated with the seven days of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even today, those associations survive visibly in names such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunday \u2014 Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday \u2014 Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturday \u2014 Saturn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similar planetary weekday systems exist across cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seven classical planets also ruled the twelve zodiac signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditionally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sun \u2192 Leo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Moon \u2192 Cancer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mercury \u2192 Gemini and Virgo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Venus \u2192 Taurus and Libra<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mars \u2192 Aries and Scorpio<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jupiter \u2192 Sagittarius and Pisces<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saturn \u2192 Capricorn and Aquarius<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the mathematical elegance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five planets rule two signs each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sun and Moon rule one each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5 \u00d7 2 + 2 = 12 signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an extraordinarily balanced symbolic system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then telescopic astronomy disturbed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uranus Changed Everything First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until then, Saturn represented the furthest visible planetary boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symbolically, Saturn naturally became associated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Restriction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Material reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The known edge of the cosmic order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then humanity literally discovered <strong>something beyond Saturn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From an esoteric perspective, that was almost too symbolically perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A planet suddenly appeared beyond the planet of boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern astrologers eventually associated Uranus with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breakthrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rebellion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sudden awakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom from old structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uranus effectively became the astrological principle of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThere is something beyond the boundary you thought was final.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That already sounds like chakra awakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uranus and Aquarius<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional astrology assigned Aquarius to Saturn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern astrology increasingly gave Uranus rulership\u2014or co-rulership\u2014over Aquarius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This did not necessarily eliminate Saturn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the sign gained two layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saturnian Aquarius:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collective organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Uranian Aquarius:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breaking convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individual freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This same principle can be applied to the chakras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outer planet does not necessarily replace the classical one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It reveals a <strong>higher-octave expression<\/strong> of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This phrase\u2014\u201chigher octave\u201d\u2014became common in modern astrological thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under this model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Uranus becomes a transpersonal or intensified expression of Saturnian themes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neptune Then Appeared Beyond Uranus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neptune was discovered on September 23\u201324, 1846.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its existence was mathematically predicted from irregularities in Uranus&#8217;s orbit, and because it is too faint to see with the naked eye, a telescope was required to identify it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Astrologically, Neptune eventually became associated with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mysticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dissolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fantasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Illusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psychic sensitivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oceanic consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loss of boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where Uranus breaks boundaries suddenly, Neptune dissolves them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This produced another modern zodiacal reassignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional ruler of Pisces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jupiter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern ruler or co-ruler:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Neptune<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, the symbolism is remarkably coherent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jupiter expands consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neptune dissolves consciousness into something larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jupiter seeks meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neptune seeks transcendence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jupiter believes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neptune mystically experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So once again, the modern planet did not necessarily destroy the old correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It appeared to reveal another layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Then Came Pluto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pluto was discovered in 1930.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Astronomically, Pluto was treated as the ninth planet for seventy-six years before the International Astronomical Union reclassified it as a dwarf planet in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Astrology generally did not care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Astrological symbolism is not determined solely by modern astronomical classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pluto continued to represent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rebirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hidden power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unconscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sexual power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obsession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The underworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pluto became associated with Scorpio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional Scorpio ruler:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern ruler or co-ruler:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pluto<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This produced perhaps the most dramatic classical-to-modern pair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars fights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pluto transforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars uses visible power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pluto operates through hidden power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mars destroys an opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pluto destroys the old self so something new can emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, Pluto can be interpreted as a deeper octave of an older planetary force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This Created Three Planetary Pairs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern astrology therefore produced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Saturn \u2192 Uranus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Structure \u2192 Liberation from structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jupiter \u2192 Neptune<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meaning and expansion \u2192 Mystical dissolution and transcendence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mars \u2192 Pluto<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will and force \u2192 Deep transformation and regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here the chakra system becomes extremely interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of squeezing ten planets into seven chakras randomly, one can place the three outer planets alongside their traditional planetary class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also something beautiful about the historical progression itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient humanity looked upward with naked eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturn appeared to be the boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then technology extended human perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A telescope revealed Uranus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mathematics and telescopes revealed Neptune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improved astronomical observation revealed Pluto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The universe became larger because <strong>our perception became larger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is exactly what chakra practice claims to do internally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ordinary consciousness perceives a limited
