When people think of evil in historical terms, they often imagine something dramatic: war, famine, dictatorship, persecution, social collapse, or open violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what happens in a prosperous society where those conditions are comparatively rare?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the Devil is understood symbolically as an archetype of division, deception, temptation, inversion, domination, and separation from one’s higher nature<\/strong>, then evil would not necessarily need to appear openly. In a stable society, its most effective forms might be almost invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of attacking civilization directly, it could work through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

distraction,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

consumerism,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

envy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

addiction,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

loneliness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

materialism,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

social comparison,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cynicism,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and the gradual weakening of community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time the political polarization of the late 2010s became impossible to ignore, many of these forces had already been developing for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the years before 2016 were not spiritually calmer because destructive influences were absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they were simply better disguised<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evil Does Not Always Need Chaos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A society does not need to be collapsing in order for people to become spiritually unhealthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, comfort can create its own vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When basic survival becomes relatively secure, human attention shifts toward:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

status,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pleasure,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

recognition,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

consumption,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

entertainment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The battlefield moves inward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than controlling people primarily through physical force, a society can increasingly shape behavior through desire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an important spiritual distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fear says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo this or you will suffer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temptation says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo this and you will finally be satisfied.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second can be much harder to recognize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumerism: The Endless Promise of Completion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the strongest pre-2016 spiritual forces was consumerism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern advertising depends upon a simple psychological mechanism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

something is missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you are not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

attractive enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

successful enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

interesting enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

comfortable enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

young enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or socially impressive enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then a product appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buy this and the feeling of incompleteness may disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a while, perhaps it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another desire appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates an endless cycle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

lack \u2192 consumption \u2192 temporary satisfaction \u2192 new lack.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From a spiritual perspective, this closely resembles traditional warnings about craving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The object changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The underlying mechanism does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person continually searches outside themselves for the feeling of completion that no purchase can permanently provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Material Success Became a Substitute for Meaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Western prosperity also encouraged another subtle equation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

successful life = materially successful life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good life increasingly became measured through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

income,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

career,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

property,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

travel,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cars,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

clothing,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and visible lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, none of these things is inherently wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Money provides freedom and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfort is valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But spiritually, problems arise when means become ends<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person begins working to live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then gradually begins living to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The career originally existed to support life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually life exists to support the career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is precisely the kind of inversion that religious traditions have repeatedly warned against.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The servant becomes the master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debt Made Desire Extend Into the Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Consumer culture acquired another powerful tool:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

credit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People no longer needed to possess the money required for the lifestyle they desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future income could be spent in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This transformed desire psychologically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI cannot afford this yet.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

the question became:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan I manage the payment?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debt is economically useful when used intelligently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But on a cultural level it can create a strange spiritual condition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the future becomes obligated to the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person may spend years working to repay desires already satisfied months or years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, consumption can begin owning time itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advertising Became a Science of Insecurity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The advertising industry became increasingly sophisticated at understanding human psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marketing does not merely ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does this person need?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does this person fear about themselves?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beauty advertisement may sell more than cosmetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may sell freedom from feeling unattractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A luxury car can sell more than transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can sell status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fashion brand can sell belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spiritual danger lies not in the object itself but in the message underneath:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you are insufficient as you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious and contemplative traditions frequently teach almost the opposite:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

your deepest worth cannot be purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumer psychology thrives when people forget that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment Became Continuous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another major change occurred through entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier generations certainly had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

television,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

music,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

movies,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

games,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and nightlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But digital technology progressively removed periods in which stimulation simply stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was always:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

another episode,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

another website,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

another game,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

another video,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

another message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually boredom itself began disappearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sounds like progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But boredom has an overlooked spiritual function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When stimulation stops, consciousness is forced to encounter itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What am I doing with my life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why am I unhappy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I actually want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What am I avoiding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuous entertainment can postpone those questions indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distraction Can Be More Effective Than Oppression<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An authoritarian system must stop people from thinking forbidden thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A culture of unlimited distraction may achieve something similar without prohibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody needs to tell you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo not contemplate your life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is simply always something more entertaining available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a very subtle form of spiritual danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing has been taken away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something has merely occupied the space where reflection might otherwise occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internet Pornography Changed the Structure of Desire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The rise of internet pornography represents another major pre-2016 transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexual imagery became:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

instant,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

private,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cheap,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and effectively unlimited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desire could increasingly be satisfied alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritually, this raises an important question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens when one of humanity’s strongest relational drives becomes increasingly detached from relationship?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that traditionally drew people toward another human being can become an isolated consumption experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social Media Initially Looked Like Pure Connection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The early promise of social media was extremely attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reconnect with old friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Share photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet people across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of those benefits were real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But social media also introduced something psychologically unprecedented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

social approval became measurable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

both a vacation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

content proving one had an interesting life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spiritual danger is subtle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The external image begins competing with the internal experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comparison Became Global<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before the internet, most people compared themselves primarily with those nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coworkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media expanded the comparison pool toward the entire planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone living an ordinary life could compare themselves daily with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

celebrities,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

millionaires,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

models,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

entrepreneurs,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

travel influencers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and carefully edited versions of strangers’ lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result can be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

envy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

insecurity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

resentment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and chronic dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing tangible has happened to the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their life may objectively be perfectly good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But comparison can make abundance feel like deprivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Envy Is an Ancient Spiritual Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is why the spiritual consequences of social media are not completely new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology magnified an ancient weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biblical tradition warned about coveting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buddhist traditions warned about craving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other philosophies warned about comparison and vanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The smartphone did not invent these impulses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It placed them on an industrial scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smartphones Brought the Attention Economy Everywhere<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The smartphone completed another transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internet no longer remained on the computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It traveled inside the pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

onto public transportation,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

into conversations,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and eventually into almost every quiet moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies discovered that human attention itself had enormous economic value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more time someone spent looking at a screen, the more opportunities existed to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

advertise,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

collect data,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

recommend content,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and shape future behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention became a commodity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritually, this is significant because attention is also one of the foundations of consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where attention goes, life follows.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Most Valuable Resource Was Becoming the Mind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Money can be lost and recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every hour consumed by something becomes an hour unavailable for something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attention economy therefore competes not merely for clicks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It competes for pieces of human life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That may be one of the most important spiritual developments of the pre-2016 era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surveillance Became Voluntary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Older visions of surveillance imagined something imposed from above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Informants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern digital surveillance evolved differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People willingly carried devices capable of recording enormous amounts of information about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This happened primarily because the devices were extraordinarily useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Banking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spiritual lesson is interesting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

control does not always arrive through something unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it arrives through convenience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convenience Can Create Dependency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Modern technology solved countless real problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But every removed difficulty can also weaken a corresponding ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navigation becomes easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memory becomes less necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment becomes effortless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food can arrive without leaving home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication requires almost no delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The larger spiritual question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At what point does convenience stop serving the person and begin shaping the person?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is rarely obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is precisely why subtle temptations are difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loneliness Grew Inside a Connected Society<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps one of the strangest contradictions of the digital era was that people became technologically connected while many traditional forms of community weakened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extended families became more geographically dispersed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious participation declined in many places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People changed cities more frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neighborhood relationships often became weaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identity groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subcultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These can provide genuine friendship and meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they can also make people vulnerable to tribalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lonely person may attach intensely to any group that says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The need itself is not pathological.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cynicism can be valuable when it exposes hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But taken too far, it destroys the ability to believe in anything sincerely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing becomes sacred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything becomes ironic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irony Can Protect the Ego From Belief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Believing deeply in something creates vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might be disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might look foolish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irony provides protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If everything is a joke, nothing can break your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the cost is enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person can eventually lose the ability to experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

devotion,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wonder,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

reverence,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritually, this may be one of the quieter paths toward nihilism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing matters.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCaring too much is embarrassing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crisis of Meaning Was Already Underway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Western societies became extraordinarily good at answering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we build faster computers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we increase productivity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we make transportation easier?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do we entertain ourselves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But technological societies are not automatically good at answering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why am I alive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What constitutes a good life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What obligations do I have?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What deserves sacrifice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What should I do with suffering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional religions once supplied widely shared answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As their cultural authority weakened, many people gained freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But freedom also meant constructing meaning individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some succeeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others drifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politics Can Fill a Spiritual Vacuum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Human beings do not stop needing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

belonging,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

moral purpose,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ritual,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

heroes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

villains,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and narratives<\/p>\n\n\n\n

simply because traditional religion declines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those psychological needs can migrate into secular systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the same impulse can become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

fear of speaking,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ritualized language policing,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or status competition over ideological purity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spiritual distinction lies between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

compassion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

control.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can look superficially similar while operating through completely different energies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identity Can Become a Substitute for Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another subtle shift occurred when personal identity became increasingly central to public discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identity matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Race, sex, religion, nationality, and social background genuinely influence people’s experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But spirituality has traditionally asked another question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are you beneath the labels?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When identity becomes everything, the person risks becoming an abstraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People begin encountering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a race,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a gender,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a political tribe,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or a demographic category<\/p>\n\n\n\n

before encountering the individual human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That increases the possibility of division even when the stated intention is justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Division Rarely Announces Itself as Division<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Groups rarely say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet us become more tribal.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They usually say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are defending justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are defending freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are protecting our people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are correcting oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of those goals may be completely legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But moral certainty can still become psychologically dangerous when it produces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

dehumanization,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

hatred,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

or refusal to consider opposing evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spiritual temptation is believing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

our side possesses goodness itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right and Left Both Have Shadows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A serious spiritual analysis cannot locate evil entirely within one political camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The left can fall into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

moral absolutism,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

coercive conformity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

class or racial resentment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and ideological purity tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The right can fall into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

nationalistic hostility,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

conspiratorial thinking,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

authoritarian nostalgia,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and resentment toward outsiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar shadow mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the Devil symbolizes division, he does not particularly care whether division arrives wearing a progressive or conservative uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is what matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Post-9\/11 Era Had Already Raised the Question of Freedom Versus Security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The political atmosphere before 2016 was also shaped profoundly by September 11, 2001 and the subsequent War on Terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western societies debated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

surveillance,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

military intervention,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

torture,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

terrorism,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

civil liberties,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The underlying question was already present:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During emergencies, people tolerate things they would resist under normal conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes that is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real emergencies require coordinated responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But emergency powers always create a spiritual and political question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When does temporary necessity become permanent habit?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The early twenty-first century repeatedly forced Western societies to confront that tension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Financial Crisis Deepened Distrust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 2008 financial crisis produced another important fracture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People watched:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

banks fail,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

homes disappear,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

employment collapse,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

governments intervene,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and wealthy institutions receive extraordinary assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever one’s economic interpretation, the psychological consequence was substantial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust declined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A generation began asking whether institutions actually served ordinary people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This distrust later became fertile ground for movements across both left and right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The political explosions of the late 2010s therefore had economic roots as well as cultural ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Devil as the Great Distractor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If all these threads are combined, perhaps the central pre-2016 spiritual archetype was not open domination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was distraction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the person:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

busy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

entertained,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

consuming,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

comparing,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

scrolling,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

desiring,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and worrying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not enough time remains to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who am I?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What actually matters?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of relationships am I building?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why am I doing any of this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens when I die?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I owe other people?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is sacred?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person does not need to reject spirituality consciously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can simply become too occupied to encounter it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Devil as Fragmentation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps an even deeper theme is fragmentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work becomes separated from meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sex becomes separated from intimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication becomes separated from relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment becomes separated from rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political identity becomes separated from individual thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology becomes separated from conscious use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People become surrounded by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

information<\/p>\n\n\n\n

without necessarily possessing wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection<\/p>\n\n\n\n

without necessarily possessing intimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

without necessarily possessing purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is spiritual fragmentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Most Effective Cage Is One That Feels Like Freedom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That may be the defining paradox of the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People gained extraordinary freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose almost any entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buy almost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communicate with almost anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travel almost anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construct almost any identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet unlimited choice can itself become exhausting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom without orientation can become drift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person may possess thousands of options and have no idea what deserves choosing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritual traditions historically supplied some form of compass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the compass disappears, freedom alone cannot tell someone where to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Open Polarization Came Quiet Disconnection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This may be the clearest way to understand the pre-2016 period spiritually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The era was not primarily defined by people screaming at one another over politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its deeper problems were quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People became:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more stimulated,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more materially comfortable,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more technologically connected,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and simultaneously vulnerable to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

comparison,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

addiction,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

loneliness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

meaninglessness,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and shallow forms of connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflict was already occurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It simply happened largely inside the individual<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Devil Did Not Need to Be Obvious<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the Devil is understood symbolically as the force that separates human beings from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

truth,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one another,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

their deeper nature,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and ultimately the sacred,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then perhaps open evil is actually the less sophisticated method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more elegant method is to make spiritual disconnection feel completely ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not tell people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cReject your soul.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCheck one more notification.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cForget your family.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re too busy this week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecome envious.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show them someone else’s perfect life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorship material possessions.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou deserve an upgrade.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecome isolated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give them unlimited digital connection without intimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing matters.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply keep them entertained long enough that they never seriously ask what does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is subtlety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spiritual Lesson of the Pre-2016 Era<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The great spiritual problem of the period may therefore have been unconscious participation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most destructive systems did not require overt coercion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People participated because the systems offered real benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consumerism offered comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology offered connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entertainment offered pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Credit offered access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media offered community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convenience offered freedom from effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of these things was inherently evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The danger appeared when the tool quietly became the master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why spiritual discernment matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The correct question is rarely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs this thing evil?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is this doing to my consciousness over time?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does it make me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more awake or more distracted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more grateful or more envious?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more connected or more isolated?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more free or more dependent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more compassionate or more tribal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more human or more performative?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those questions reveal far more than the surface appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the Devil Was Hiding in Normality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before the political temperature rose, destructive tendencies may have been easiest to overlook precisely because they looked so normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buy things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing dramatic enough to inspire a rebellion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But spiritually, a life can become empty through a thousand perfectly ordinary decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That may be one of the deepest lessons of the era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evil does not always arrive announcing itself as evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it arrives as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

convenience,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

status,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

entertainment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

comfort,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and distraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its success lies not in making people obviously miserable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It lies in keeping them occupied enough that they never notice what is missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps that is the clearest answer to the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where was the Devil before 2016?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not necessarily hiding inside one government, party, or ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But symbolically present wherever human beings gradually surrendered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

attention,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

meaning,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

community,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

discernment,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and inner freedom<\/p>\n\n\n\n

without realizing that they were giving anything away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
