Adrian first noticed Ha-neul because she didn’t seem interested in being noticed.

Most people arrived at the language exchange trying to impress someone.

Ha-neul simply arrived.

She greeted people politely.

Listened more than she spoke.

Then disappeared into conversations like water finding a path downhill.

Adrian had spent years reading rooms.

Years organizing events.

Years watching people.

And yet this woman confused him.

Sometimes she seemed shy.

Other times she would suddenly tease someone and have the whole table laughing.

Sometimes she sat across the room.

Other times she appeared beside him as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

He couldn’t figure out the pattern.

And that bothered him.

Virgos liked patterns.

One Thursday evening, Adrian was talking about cars.

A terrible habit.

Most people tolerated it.

A few escaped it.

Ha-neul listened.

Actually listened.

He found himself explaining how a twenty-year-old Korean sports coupe could still make him smile.

Most people would have changed the subject.

Instead she tilted her head.

“Why do you like it so much?”

It wasn’t the question.

It was how she asked it.

Like she genuinely wanted to know.

Not because she cared about cars.

Because she cared why he cared.

For a moment Adrian forgot the room around him.

He spoke about effort.

About building things.

About how something becomes beautiful when people put their soul into it.

When he finally stopped talking, he realized she was smiling.

Not at the car.

At him.

The next week she was gone.

Then she returned.

Then gone again.

Then back.

Like the moon.

Predictable in existence.

Impossible in timing.

Each absence bothered him more than it should have.

Each return brought relief he never admitted.

One night she asked him a strange question.

“What are you doing tomorrow?”

Adrian shrugged.

“Meeting some friends.”

She nodded.

“What about Saturday?”

He told her he was teaching.

Again she nodded.

The conversation moved on.

But later that night he found himself replaying it.

Why had she asked?

Was she curious?

Making conversation?

Looking for something?

His Virgo mind immediately built thirty-seven possible explanations.

None felt satisfying.

Ha-neul, meanwhile, was developing her own problem.

Adrian wasn’t like the other men.

Most men spoke to her differently when they found her attractive.

The change was obvious.

Predictable.

Sometimes disappointing.

Adrian never changed.

He treated her exactly the same whether she was dressed casually or looked beautiful.

Whether they sat together all evening or barely spoke.

Sometimes she wondered if he liked her.

Other times she wondered if he was completely oblivious.

Neither answer felt right.

Weeks passed.

Neither moved closer.

Neither moved away.

They simply orbited.

Like two planets caught in the gravity of something neither fully understood.

And every time they crossed paths, both left wondering the same thing.

“What exactly is happening here?”
